The numbers below come from building our own products at AppDuce and from knowing the studio world from the inside. No fluff, no sales speak, just how this actually shakes out.

Price isn't one number. It's where four different things meet.
The first is complexity. There's an enormous gap between a simple app (lists, forms, basic CRUD) and one juggling real-time maps, payments, and AI.

The second is platform. iOS only, Android only, or both? It feeds straight into the cost. Cross-platform tools like React Native or Flutter let you hit both from one codebase, and the saving is real: somewhere around 30-40% versus building each one natively.
The third is design scope. A pre-built UI kit and a fully custom design are worlds apart on both cost and timeline. For startups we'd say ship version one on a clean, kit-based design and save the custom work for after you've found product-market fit.
The fourth is backend and infrastructure. A BaaS like Firebase keeps your upfront cost down. The moment you need a custom backend (complex logic, heavy data crunching) the number climbs, and the ongoing server bill is easy to forget until it arrives.

The costs everyone forgets
This is the part most people skip over. A typical quote covers "development" and stops there, but the spending doesn't stop when the app goes live.
The Apple Developer Program is $99 a year, every year, and there's no way around it. Google's Play Console is a one-time $25, cheap but still real. Server and backend costs start at nothing on Firebase's free tier, then grow with your users; figure anywhere from $50 to $500 or more a month depending on scale. Third-party APIs stack up quietly too: maps, SMS verification, payment gateways, push notifications, each with its own meter running, and the maps API alone can be $50-200 a month. Then there's maintenance. iOS and Android both ship major updates every year and your app has to keep up, which usually runs 15-20% of the original build budget annually. And app store optimization is its own ongoing job; either you do the ASO work yourself or you pay someone who does.
Honest ways to spend less
Hunting for cheaper developers isn't how you save money. Making smarter calls is.
Start with an MVP. Don't stuff every feature into version one; ship the two or three that matter most and let users point you to the rest. Cost only means anything next to what it returns. Spend $8,000 on an app that pulls in $2,000 a month and it's paid for itself by month four. Spend the same $8,000 on an app nobody opens and you've got a zero.
So the question that comes before the budget one: does this app solve a problem people actually have? If it does, the cost is an investment. If it doesn't, it's just an expense.
